Ligo Haibun Challenge

Quotes Week

“Wise men talk about ideas, intellectuals about facts, and the ordinary man talks about what he eats.”

I stroll to the food court, listening to the stall owner gossiping about anybody who could not hear him. I smile, knowing that he would gossip about me after I walk away. He tells off everybody, but takes less money and always serves more than what they demand. The street dog enters the food court and barks non-stop. He throws some food at it, while berating the non-paying ‘customer’. The dog, understanding nothing, wags his tail humbly.

Stray intruders fly away

as lame words

fall on deaf ears

This was written for the Ligo Haibun Challenge. Thank you, Pirate and Esenga, for the opportunity.

  1. There’s a saying for that – ‘salt of the earth’! For all his faults he keeps the community together, happy, and his gossip is surely not evil. Its a few line between endearing and negativity, I mean the one who complains, but the one who gossips, often making embarrassing comments about the person can be funny, if not done maliciously. This scene is so real and human, and multilayered, and his actions speak louder than his words.
It is such a pleasure to get a haibun from you! If you have a quote or word up your sleeve like the ‘old days’ we will surely use them anytime! Take care!

    • Yes, there are people like him around. They don’t mean bad, but gossip as an outlet, to get out their frustration. Thank you, Pirate. Thank God for the Chinese New Year..have some leave:) will get back to you with quotes

      • Oh Nightlake – SORRY – I REALLY thought I had replied. Maybe it is still in the draft folder. I know I put them on my latest Ligo post on Weebly then changed my mind and mentioned you were giving quotes. Will check…SORRY….again…….

  2. Fantastic! I like that Padmini. We don’t see animals the same way as we see people. We give things to animals who ask, but we deny people. A great moral to this.
